Một trong những niềm vui phụ khi thưởng thức trà là việc lựa chọn các dụng cụ như chén, ấm, hộp đựng, và đặc biệt là ấm trà. Sự đa dạng về hình dáng, kích cỡ và trang trí có thể khiến ta quên mất chức năng quan trọng của ấm. Khi mua ấm trà, yếu tố đầu tiên cần cân nhắc là kích thước (phù hợp nhu cầu từ một đến sáu chén trà). Tiếp theo là chất liệu ưa thích (thủy tinh, gốm hoặc sứ) và mục đích sử dụng như pha trà hay rót trà đã pha. Các yếu tố quan trọng khác bao gồm: liệu nó có dễ cầm, rót tốt và tất nhiên là phù hợp với ngân sách của bạn.
Ấm trà bằng thủy tinh

Các ấm trà thủy tinh có thể bị ố màu, nhưng chỉ cần chà nhẹ với hoặc không cần xà phòng là có thể làm sạch. Nếu dùng xà phòng, cần rửa kỹ bằng nước ấm để không còn cặn xà phòng. Hãy kiểm tra hướng dẫn của nhà sản xuất xem ấm có an toàn khi rửa bằng máy rửa chén không. Ấm trà bằng gốm
Các ấm trà gốm thường được nung trong hố lộ thiên và xuất hiện từ 11.000 năm trước ở châu Á và Trung Đông cho mục đích sử dụng hàng ngày. Ấm gốm được nung ở nhiệt độ thấp hơn ấm sứ. Ấm gốm có khả năng giữ nhiệt tốt, ít thấm nước và pha trà nhanh. Nên sử dụng đồng hồ hẹn giờ trong lần pha đầu tiên để điều chỉnh thời gian pha theo khẩu vị. Nếu ấm được tráng men, bạn có thể thay đổi loại trà; nếu không được tráng men như ấm trà Tử sa thì chỉ nên dùng cho một loại trà nhất định.
Để vệ sinh, nếu cả bên ngoài và bên trong đều được tráng men, hãy rửa như bình thường; nếu bên trong không tráng men, chỉ cần rửa sạch lá trà và tráng bằng nước nóng trước mỗi lần sử dụng để làm ấm ấm và giúp ấm dễ pha hơn. Một số ấm gốm có sẵn bộ lọc gốm hoặc lưới riêng; một số khác thì không, vì vậy bạn sẽ cần sử dụng rây cầm tay khi rót trà vào cốc.
