Vào thời Minh Thanh, Chu Nê thuộc vào phạm trù của Hồng Nê, không có tên riêng. Đến thời Dân Quốc, trong cuốn “Dương Tiện Sha Hồ Đồ Khảo” bắt đầu nhắc đến “Chu Nê”, nhưng không có sự phân tách rõ rệt với Hồng Nê. Từ năm 1949 đến nay, trình độ công nghiệp hóa trong khai thác đất phát triển, khiến số lượng và quy mô khai thác mở rộng, để phân tách đất, người chơi ấm gọi loại ấm có phẩm chất tốt, màu sắc tươi sáng trong đất hồng nê gọi là ấm chu nê, những chiếc còn lại gọi là ấm Hồng Nê.

Chu Nê có kết cấu cát bột, rời rạc và nặng, tan trong nước. Hàm lượng Oxit sắt trong Chu Nê cao hơn Hồng Nê, nên ấm Chu Nê thường có màu sắc đậm đà hơn. 

Nếu so với những loại tử sa khác, tỷ lệ co ngót khi để khô và nung của Chu Nê cao, Hồng Nê thường có độ co ngót 13%, độ co ngót tổng thể của Chu Nê hơn 17%, thậm chí đến 25%. 

Sau khi đã trở thành ấm thành phẩm, độ kết tinh của chu nê cao, bề ngoài đẹp, tiếng đanh như tiếng kim loại, bề mặt cắt của mảnh vỡ gần như đồ sứ (độ sứ hóa cao), vẫn có tính thấu khí nhất định. Sự thay đổi màu của ấm chu nê khi nhiệt độ thay nóng lạnh thay đổi đột ngột là rất rõ, khi có nước sôi, màu ấm sẽ đậm lên, càng hồng nhuận hơn, khi đổ nước nóng đi, ấm sẽ trở về màu cũ rất nhanh.
